Wenn es eine fliegende Stadt gibt, dann fragt man sich natürlich, was sie am Himmel hält. Herr Miyazaki hat in seinem Anime folgende Antwort gegeben: Einst existierte eine technologisch ungeheuer fortgeschrittene Zivilisation, die unter anderem in der Lage war, aus bestimmten Mineralien blau leuchtende Kristalle zu gewinnen, die die Schwerkraft aufheben können und deshalb Levitationssteine genannt werden.

Die alte Zivilisation ist längst erloschen, nur noch wenige Legenden erinnern an sie, Märchen im Grunde, an die keiner glaubt oder jedenfalls fast keiner. Doch ein paar Menschen gibt es noch, die aus unterschiedlichen Gründen davon überzeugt sind, dass Laputa, die Stadt im Himmel, tatsächlich existiert hat und immer noch existiert. Einer davon ist der Junge Pazu, der eines Nachts bei der Arbeit im Kohlekraftwerk das Mädchen Sheeta auffängt, das buchstäblich vom Himmel gefallen ist. Als sie merken, dass am nächsten Morgen sowohl Piraten als auch Agenten der Regierung hinter Sheeta her sind und dies wohlmöglich mit dem sonderbaren Stein zutun hat, den Sheeta um den Hals trägt, fliehen sie und machen sich gleichzeitig auf die Suche nach dem Schloss im Himmel …


Anmerkung:
Die Film beruht lose auf Jonathan Swifts Geschichte »Gullivers Reisen«, in der der Held Gulliver unter anderem auch in der fliegenden Stadt Laputa landet.
