Die Geschichte beruht letztlich auf Jonathan Swifts "Gullivers Reisen", wo der Held Gulliver auch in der fliegenden Stadt Laputa landet.
Wenn es eine fliegende Stadt gibt, dann fragt man sich natürlich, was sie am Himmel hält. Herr Miyazaki hat in seinem Anime folgende Antwort gegeben: einst existierte eine technisch ungeheuer fortgeschrittene Zivilisation, die unter anderem in der Lage war, aus bestimmten Mineralien blau leuchtende Kristalle zu gewinnen, die die Schwerkraft aufheben können und deshalb Levitationssteine genannt werden.
Die alte Zivilisation ist längst erloschen, nur noch wenige Legenden erinnern an sie, Märchen im Grunde, an die keiner glaubt, oder jedenfalls fast keiner. Ein paar Menschen gibt es noch, die aus unterschiedlichen Gründen davon überzeugt sind, dass Laputa, die Stadt im Himmel, tatsächlich existiert hat und immer noch existiert. Und dann taucht ein junges Mädchen namens Sheeta auf, das um den Hals einen Levitationsstein trägt...
