Die wilde Benio „Haikara-san“ Hanamura hat als junges Mädchen ihre Mutter verloren und wurde in der Folge alleine von ihrem Vater, einem hochrangigen Offiziellen in der japanischen Armee, erzogen. In diesem Umfeld hat sich Benio zu einem Tomboy entwickelt und ist immer an vorderster Front mit dabei, wenn es darum geht, mit den Traditionen der Gesellschaft im Japan des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts zu brechen. Egal ob als Frau beim Kendo, abends beim Sake trinken oder durch ihre auffallend westliche Kleidung, Benio sticht immer ins Auge. Als sie eines Tages den jungen Soldaten Shinobu trifft, verfällt dieser dem Mädchen sofort und beginnt seine langen und leidenschaftlichen Bemühungen um ihr Herz… Mit Mademoiselle Hanamura liefert Regisseur Kazuhiro Furuhashi einen bezaubernden Film im klassischen Animationsstil ab, bei der sich nicht in zu vielen Details verloren wird, sondern der Fokus mehr auf der herzlichen Geschichte rund um Benio und Shinobu ruht. Diese außergewöhnliche Romanze mit komödiantischen Einlagen strahlt eine ganz eigene Anziehung aus!
