Unsere Geschichte spielt in einem kleinen abgeschiedenen Ort namens Hinamizawa im Jahre 1983. Die Geschichte beginnt mit Keiichi Maebara, der vor kurzem nach Hinamizawa umgezogen ist. Anfangs noch fremd in der neuen Umgebung freundet er sich schnell mit den Schülern aus der lokalen Schule an, darunter Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude und Satoko Houjou, welche ihm helfen, sich schnell einzuleben. Es dauert auch nicht lange, bis er sich entscheidet dem einzigen Club beizutreten, welcher von seinen neu gefundenen Freunden geführt wird.
Doch eines Tages erfährt er von einem dunklen Geheimnis. Eine Mordserie, die vor fünf Jahren begann und noch immer Tote fordert. Jedes Jahr zur gleichen Zeit, am Abend des örtlichen Watanagashi-Festivals, kommt es zu einem weiteren dieser Morde. Nach und nach fängt Keiichi an, Nachforschungen über diese Verbrechen anzustellen und findet immer mehr über deren Hintergrunde heraus, wobei sein Vertrauen zu seinen Freunden langsam anfängt auseinanderzufallen.
