Taeko Okajima ist eine typische Büroangestellte in einem großen Unternehmen in einer großen Stadt. Als sie Urlaub auf dem Land in der Yamagata Präfektur - im Heimatort ihres Schwagers - macht, erinnert sie sich während ihrer Reise an Ereignisse, als sie in der fünften Klasse war. Während ihres Aufenthalts in Yamagata arbeitet sie hart, aber glücklich als Bäuerin und ist dabei von ihren Verwandten und anderen Dorfbewohnern umgeben, was dazu führt, dass sie sich an weitere Dinge erinnern muss. Ihre Gastfreundschaft sorgt dafür, dass Takeo ihre eigene Lebensart noch einmal überdenken muss.

Der Film Tränen der Erinnerung - Only Yesterday wurde unter der Regie von Isao Takahata produziert, der bereits bei anderen Filmen wie Die letzten Glühwürmchen oder Serien wie Heidi Regie führte.

Taeko Okajima ist 27 Jahre alt und arbeitet als Angestellte in einem Büro in Tokio, hat allerdings einen Erholungsurlaub bei Verwandten auf dem Lande vor sich. Doch die Reise soll viel mehr werden als nur ein einfacher Ausflug. Schon auf der Hinfahrt überkommen Taeko Erinnerungen an ihre Kindheit und diese sollen sie auch die gesamte Reise über nicht wieder los lassen. So entwickelt sich der Urlaub zu einer Art Selbstfindungstrip, auf dem Taeko über ihr bisheriges Leben und ihre Zukunft nachdenkt. Immer neue Begebenheiten aus ihrer Kindheit fallen ihr wieder ein, während sie ihren Verwandten bei der Landarbeit hilft und die schöne Natur genießt. Aber auch in der Gegenwart geht es weiter. Schon bei ihrer Ankunft lernt sie einen netten Jungen Mann kennen und die beiden verstehen sich auf Anhieb recht gut.​
