Kaze Tachinu handelt von dem Flugzeugbauingenieur Jiro Horikoshi, der schon als kleiner Junge immer wieder Träume vom Fliegen hat und in diesen Caproni trifft, einen italienischen Flugzeugbauer, der ihm immer wieder Ratschläge gibt. Als Student begegnet er Naoko, die er jedoch schon bald wieder aus den Augen verliert. Er beginnt bei einem Flugzeughersteller zu arbeiten und weckt dort bald die Aufmerksamkeit seiner Vorgesetzten. Als die Firma starke Schwierigkeiten wegen ihres technischen Rückstandes hat, wird Jiro zu einem Austausch nach Deutschland geschickt. Eines Tages trifft Jiro in einem Ferienort Naoko wieder. Die beiden verlieben sich und bald folgt die Verlobung. Allerdings hat Naoko Tuberkulose und weigert sich zu heiraten, bis sie sich erholt hat. Jiro kann beim Flugzeugbau Erfolge verzeichnen und steigt in der Firma auf. Als es Naoko etwas besser geht, flieht sie aus ihrem Kurort und die beiden heirateten. Trotz ihres immer noch angeschlagenen Zustandes bleibt Naoko bei Jiro, der in seiner Arbeit aufgeht. Doch dann verschlechtert sich Naokos Gesundheit wieder...
